Our Projects

Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT)
SMAK provides a free HIV/AIDS testing and counselling service, open to anyone. Young people are often put off being tested as centers are run by counsellors twice their age who they perceive as unable to relate to their age group. SMAK VCT centers are run by youths, for youths. They can relate to one another and counsellors are trained in many issues including peer pressure, teenage pregnancy, rape and prostitution.

IT Classes and Cyber Cafe
IT classes are also taken by a young teacher, and the usual format is one-to-one tuition, for a very small fee. On completion of the course, students receive a National Certificate, giving them another skill to assist in job seeking.

Child Care
Many single mothers remain unemployed or leave young children home alone while they work, due to a lack of affordable options. SMAK provides day care for their children for a small fee, where they can be confident they are safe whilst they work or participate in SMAK training.

Bead Workshop
SMAK can provide classes in bead crafts in our workshop and assist in finding a market for completed products.

Tailoring Workshop
SMAK can provide classes in basic tailoring and sewing as well as use of a sewing machine and assistance in finding a market.

SMART Kitchens
SMAK believes that you cannot solve problems by focusing on just one group. SMART kitchens is a project aimed at boys (but open to anyone) who left school with few or no qualifications. The boys are trained in metal work and produce kitchen equipment which is sold locally and even outwith Kenya. The boys are taught by qualified, committed volunteers.

Umeme Sports Club
Umeme was established in 1972 and has provided a place for youths in the local area to focus on sport and be supported in their education and health as well. They have an office in SMAK grounds and members also benefit from SMAK's services, such as VCT

Support Groups
SMAK provides a safe and welcoming environment for various support and offshoot groups to meet and hold activities. Among these are a Gender Based Violence support group, a youth dance group, acting and singing group and an HIV/AIDS support group.
